The Code of Federal Regulations
Its the Law! The Code of Federal Regulation (CFR) is a codification of the general and permanent rules published in the Federal Register by the Executive departments and agencies of the Federal Government. The code is divided into 50 titles which represent broad areas subject to Federal regulation. Each Title is divided into chapters, which usually bear the name of the issuing agency. The United States Coast Guard has published several chapters that are of interest to recreational boaters. Some of the areas covered include Electrical Systems, Flotation, Fuel Systems, Safe Loading and Safe Powering and Ventilation. CFRs are Federal Regulations and are not suggested guidelines as are the ABYC Standards. The marine surveyor will evaluate the vessel for any CFR violations and publish them in the Findings and Recommendations section of the Survey Report. CFR violations should be remedied before the vessel is next underway.
